Coach Arsenio Avant is excited about returning to JCC Maccabi Sports Camp for his third summer as our Head Basketball Coach. He hails from Florida and brings experience, passion and the tools of the game to give all campers an experience they will never forget.
After graduating from Cypress Bay High School in Weston, FL in 2007, Arsenio went on to receive a full scholarship to play basketball at Nova Southeastern University. After a change of heart in his career choice, Arsenio transferred to Elms College in Chicopee, MA to continue playing basketball and pursue a degree in what is now his greatest passion, education. He has taught for the past four years (2 years in Massachusetts, 2 years in Florida). Along with teaching, he coaches Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball at the David Posnack Jewish Day School in Cooper City, FL. One of the best things about working here, he says, is the growing knowledge and respect for the Jewish religion.
As a coach, Arsenio does his best to instill the discipline and values needed to be successful in not just basketball but life. Among these values, fun and hard work sit atop his list, as he believes they go hand-in-hand and can bring out anyone’s potential when combined. Working with pre-teen and teenagers has been one of his greatest rewards as a coach due to his enjoyment of having the opportunity to play a part, big or small, in building a positive foundation for young children.
When it comes to camp experience Arsenio has been fortunate enough to attend as a player and work at many prestigious camps in the past: 5-Star Basketball Camp (New England), Dwayne Wade Basketball Camp, American Heritage Basketball Camp, and Lightning Basketball Camp, just to name a few. Here at these camps he has learned a lot as a former player and current coach, from various individual developmental skills to team drills used at the collegiate and professional level. With this kind of experience, Avant hopes to make each and everyday a successful one for your child.
