Mikaela will be Counselor and Assistant Basketball Coach this summer!
Mikaela Freundlich is a native of the Basque Country of Spain. She recently graduated from Denison University in Granville, OH and is currently working as an intern at the Public Health department at UC San Diego. She is planning on pursuing a Master’s in Public Health next year, and in the meantime, she is very excited to help coach basketball and lead various activities at JCC Maccabi Sports Camp this summer!
Mikaela has been playing basketball since third grade. She played in her high school Varsity team, earning provincial championships all four years. She was also selected to play in the all-region Basque team two years in a row, coming in second both years in the Spanish National Championship. Additionally, Mikaela played Varsity basketball all four years of college at Denison, and was named captain of the team her senior year. Now that competitive collegiate basketball is over, Mikaela continues to scrimmage with her friends and is also taking different kinds of yoga classes, including Hatha, alignment-based, acrobatic, and aerial yoga.
Being a camper herself in the past, Mikaela is most certainly aware of what makes camp fun and memorable. Her experiences in Nike overnight basketball camps have taught her that coaches and counselors play a crucial role in creating not only an enjoyable environment, but also an unforgettable experience. Friendship, respect, teamwork, discipline, and hard work are some of the many important values that she has learned from her coaches and counselors in camp as well as throughout her basketball career. With this terrific opportunity as a coach/counselor, she would like to implement these values on the campers, always keeping in mind that the goal is to have a good time.
Teaching is also one of Mikaela’s passions, as she has taught English to pre-teens and teenagers, tutored Spanish and Psychology to college students, and has been a Teaching Assistant for a college-level Spanish class. Although her academic future is yet to be determined, one of her options is to become a college professor. Education is an inspiring tool that Mikaela believes has the power to change people’s lives for the better, which is part of the reason why she is pumped to be a part of camp this summer!
