Camper Spotlight: Carly
Hometown: Santa Cruz, CA
Cabin: Teen Leaders (10th & 11th graders)
Core Sport: Basketball
Carly joined us for her second summer at JCC Maccabi Sports Camp. She felt that her basketball skills improved significantly in her time last summer, making her decision to return an easy one!
What has been your favorite part of your camp experience so far?
Being able to play sports every day. Obviously I love my core sport (basketball), but I’m glad that I’ve ben able to try new sports like cricket, tennis, and indoor soccer.
What has been the most challenging thing for you so far?
The most difficult thing for me was adjusting to playing a sport for four hours a day six days a week. It’s tough on your body, but I think I’ve done a good job of eating right, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. My counselors have really helped me take care of myself.
What has been your favorite evening activity?
Definitely Human Mario Kart. It was really creative and I liked the variety of activities it involved. Plus the counselor acting was really funny.
What is your favorite camp meal?
The eggplant parmesan. It was super delicious.
What is your favorite part of Shabbat at camp?
I like how the whole camp spends time all together. The normal schedule is really fun, but I like how Shabbat gives us the opportunity to be together as an entire community.
What is your favorite part about an average day at camp?
I love core sport because of the coaches. They are very patient and really want to see you improve. I also really enjoy evening program, it’s always very creative and fun.
Do you have any advice for campers coming to camp?
I would tell them to come with an open mind. There’s so much more to this camp than sports and Judaism. If you come with an open mind you will make so many friends and learn a lot about yourself.
