Introducing Head Basketball Coach, Justin Tarplin

Justin began his coaching journey with the South Blvd. Soldiers AAU program. He is currently in both head and assistant coach roles for various age groups in the program. He is also currently serving as an assistant coach for his Alma Mater, the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy (U of D).

Justin was born and raised in the Metro-Detroit area. He was a two-sport athlete through
high school and college, competing in both basketball and track & field. Justin’s junior year team at U of D was nationally ranked at #2 in the country by MaxPreps, & #4 in the country by USA Today Sports. They also went on to win a Class A state championship, while finishing the season 28-0.

After graduating high school he went on to play collegiate basketball. During his time at
Webster University, Justin appeared in 12 games as a freshman. Following his freshman year he transferred to Quincy University, where he got a BS in General Studies with a focus in Aviation and Management. Justin earned a scholarship at Quincy University, but after two torn ACLs he had to give up his playing career before completing his undergrad. Justin saw this as an opportunity rather than a setback, to sit on the sideline and see aspects of the game from a non-player perspective for the first time, shifting his mindset from player to coach.

This summer, Coach Justin is excited to share his knowledge of the game and training the next generation of players through fundamentals as well as advanced skills. His core focus will be individual development, and making sure each camper leaves better than they were at the start of their session. Justin would like each camper to take home the necessary skills and drills to improve further on their own after camp has finished.

We’re excited for Coach Justin to join our amazing camp community this summer!
